The Great Barrier Reef is very popular with tourists and locals. It is located in the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland, Australia. At over 2000 kilometres in length, it's the world's largest coral reef. In fact it's so large that it can be seen from space. The Great Barrier Reef was first seen by European explorers on 11 June 1770 when Captain James Cook's ship ran aground on it. An interesting way to make a new discovery!
